DPP chairman accuses Ma of trickery

    By Jewel Huang

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Chairman Yu Shyi-kun yesterday accused Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) of trickery by pretending he did not know in advance of the KMT caucus' decision to vote down the president's nominee for state public prosecutor-general.

Yu asked Ma to stop conniving with the opposition parties to cause disturbances in the legislature.

Yu, attending the DPP's weekly Central Standing Committee meeting yesterday, was referring to the KMT and the People First Party's (PFP) joint move to scupper Hsieh Wen-ding's (謝文定) nomination.

Yu said it was ironic that Hsieh's appointment was vetoed, yet the unconstitutional March 19 Shooting Truth Investigation Special Committee Statute (三一九槍擊事件真相調查特別委員會條例) was passed on the same day, which showed that the Legislative Yuan was being controlled by "an unreasonable power."

"We respect the authority of the Legislative Yuan to approve or reject the candidate for state public prosecutor-general, but we also believe that partisan politics should not influence judicial independence," Yu said.

"But seeing the farce staged in the Legislative Yuan, we saw Ma, a former Minister of Justice, once again show his Teflon-like quality by dodging political responsibility and claiming he knew nothing about the KMT caucus' decision. This is a typical Ma trick," he said.

Yu said that boycotts by the pan-blue legislators had reduced the Control Yuan to idleness, while the budgets for the Examination Yuan and Executive Yuan remain frozen.

"The unreasonable behavior of the pan-blue camp has paralyzed the government. People have to be aware that sabotaging democracy is a lot easier than accomplishing it," the DPP chief said.

He also blamed PFP Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜) for succumbing to the threats of TV talk shows hosts, who promised to "vaporize Soong from the political world" if the PFP supported Hsieh's appointment.

"Hsieh has become a sacrifice to political confrontation. We want to ask Ma and Soong -- is this the reasonable surveillance [of party caucuses] that you have been promising?" Yu said.

Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) also denounced the pan-blue camp's attempts to paralyze the country, but said she believed the public would have its own view on the pan-blue camp's conduct.

DPP caucus whip Chen Chin-jun (陳景竣) said that he hoped President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) would nominate Hsieh again, or else the pan-blue camp would have achieved its goal of manipulating the choice of candidate in its favor.
