Taiwan Quick Take: Chen warns businesspeople
Friday, Apr 07, 2006, Page 3
President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) yesterday cautioned businesspeople to consider China's internal problems before investing in the booming economy and to put the nation's interests first. "China is a market but not the only market nor the entire market," Chen said in his weekly A-bian E-newsletter to be published today. "I hope all Taiwanese businesspeople bear the nation's economic interests in mind when making overseas investments and refuse to serve as subordinates of another country." Chen said many Taiwanese businesspeople had rushed to China even before the "no haste, be patient" cross-strait trade and economic policy was announced in 1996. However, Chen said that most of them -- including entrepreneur and billionaire Wang Yung-ching (王永慶) -- had failed to see a return on their capital. Saying that China was neither democratic nor "normal," Chen said the reason the government kept reminding the public of the political and commercial risks of investing in China was to prevent them from suffering unnecessary losses.
