Taiwan Quick Take: KMT may consider arms bill
Friday, Apr 07, 2006, Page 3
The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) may consider a long-stalled arms procurement package after Chinese President Hu Jintao's (胡錦濤) visit to the US later this month, a party official said on Wednesday. Tseng Yung-chuan (曾永權), executive director of the KMT's policy coordination department, was responding to media reports that the KMT "would not passively accept" the arms procurement package broached by the US and would come up with a new list of weapons to be included in the package. "It's just a personal idea of KMT Legislator-at-large Su Chi's (蘇起)," Tseng said, adding that the KMT had yet to reach consensus on the issue. At the moment, Tseng said, the party was inclined to wait until after a meeting between Hu and US President George W. Bush.
