Young DPP legislators push party caucus on reform

    By Jewel Huang

Facing a growing call from young Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) lawmakers to hold a conference on party reform, the party's legislative caucus said yesterday that convening a provisional national convention of party delegates was probably a better way of resolving the problems that the young lawmakers were worried about.

DPP caucus whips Chen Chin-jun (陳景峻) and Yeh Yi-ching (葉宜津) said yesterday that a conference on party reform would be out of order and the resolutions reached during any conference would not be binding.

"Therefore, asking the DPP's headquarters to hold a provisional national convention of party delegates would be a more feasible and more meaningful way to resolve any problems," Chen said, since any resolutions reached at a provisional national convention of party delegates would be binding on both the party and the administration.

A provisional national convention could include all the topics that party members want to discuss, such as China policy, the relationship between the DPP and the government, or any other issues concerning reform, Chen said.

"We urge the DPP's high-ranking officials to meet the expectations of the public and party members. They cannot refuse our request to hold a national convention," he added.

In reaction to the demands of the legislative caucus, DPP spokesman Tsai Huang-liang (蔡煌瑯) said yesterday that the DPP was still discussing whether or not to hold a provisional national convention.

Meanwhile, as a way of hammering out the details for a conference on party reforms, six young DPP legislators, Yu Cheng-tao (余政道), Shen Fa-hui (沈發惠), Chen Chi-yu (陳啟昱), Tsai Chi-chang (蔡其昌), Cheng Yun-peng (鄭運鵬) and Hsieh Hsin-ni (謝欣霓), held a meeting in the Legislative Yuan yesterday afternoon.

After the two-hour meeting, they held a news conference to announce their conclusions.

Hsieh said that they hoped the conference on reform would have no restrictions placed on topics for discussion and who could attend.

She also said that they would invite all DPP lawmakers to participate in the 10-day conference.

Meanwhile, the Presidential Office and the DPP said yesterday that they were willing to participate in any conference on party reform launched by young lawmakers, according to party spokesman Tsai Huang-liang (蔡煌瑯).

Tsai made the remarks after staff members from the Presidential Office and the party held a meeting yesterday afternoon.

Tsai said that the party values the opinions of young lawmakers.

On whether the party would hold a provisional national convention, Tsai said the party does not think it is necessary for the time being since a national convention is already scheduled to take place in July.
