Fines to be applied for poorly sorted household waste

Violators of the garbage separation and collection classification scheme will be hit with fines from NT$1,200 to a maximum of NT$6,000 starting from tomorrow, the Environmental Protection Administration (EPA) announced yesterday.

The policy, which has been enforced in 10 cities and counties nationwide since the beginning of the year, requires the public to sort garbage into three categories -- ordinary garbage, recyclables and food scraps.

Garbage that is not properly separated will be rejected, with offenders facing fines of between NT$1,200 and NT$6,000. The policy is set to be implemented in all 25 cities and counties nationwide, Environmental Protection Minister Chang Kow-lung (張國龍) said.

Chang said the EPA launched the second wave of a publicity drive yesterday to enhance implementation of the policy. Publicity films will be shown on TV and before movie screenings in the coming months, he added.
