Taiwan Quick Take: EPA disposes of utensils
Friday, Mar 31, 2006, Page 3
The Environmental Protection Administration announced this week a new regulation that will prohibit cafeterias in government agencies from using disposable utensils starting July 1. If the regulation proves to be effective, the administration plans to apply the new regulation to restaurants nationwide, it added. The administration said its cafeterias will not offer cups, plates, bowls, saucers, lunchboxes, chopsticks and spoons if diners decide to have their meals inside. For takeout orders, however, they can provide utensils made from non-plastic and non-polyester materials and can provide disposable chopsticks, straws and plastic wraps. The administration estimates that the policy will help the nation save 2,700 tonnes of disposable utensils.
