Government should take initiative on`status quo': MAC

The Mainland Affairs Council said yesterday that Taiwan should take more of the initiative to interpret the cross-strait "status quo" in the face of China's rising military power.
A statement of the conclusion from an internal consulting committee of the council yesterday indicated the government should "assert the right to interpret the cross-strait status quo and strive for opportunities to engage in strategic cooperation with other countries in the region."
The committee meeting commenced yesterday to discuss China's military expansion and its implications for regional stability 10 years after the 1996 Taiwan Strait missile crisis.
The committee suggested the government improve its forecasts on industries suited for investment in China, Vietnam and India, to reduce economic reliance on China.
The meeting was attended by academics, business leaders and legislators, including Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Legislator Chu Feng-chih (朱鳳芝), the Democratic Progressive Party's Tung Li-wen (董立文) and Tsai Horng-ming (蔡宏明), of the Chinese National Federation of Industries.
