Taiwan Quick Take: New abattoirs promoted

    Saturday, Mar 18, 2006, Page 3

The government will help poultry vendors to build slaughterhouses to end on-site slaughtering in traditional markets to improve the nation's bird flu prevention efforts, Council of Agriculture officials said yesterday. According to the officials, there are 23 licensed poultry slaughterhouses in the country, with 19 others under construction. The council will provide all necessary assistance to any traditional poultry sellers planning to build slaughterhouses, they said. The officials made the remarks one day after President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) demanded the Cabinet move efficiently to ban on-site poultry slaughtering in traditional markets as a measure to prevent the spread of bird flu.
