Minister of Justice Morley Shih (¬IZªL) said yesterday that police intelligence indicates prices ranging from NT$1 million (US$30,888) to NT$5 million were being offered to buy votes in the March 1 elections for city and county council speakers and deputy speakers.
Shih said judicial authorities are doing all they can to stop vote-buying and other bribery.
He has called a meeting of prosecutors and local police chiefs in Tainan to brief them on recent efforts to crack down on alleged election irregularities.
He said that in some cities or counties, one council member's vote is worth NT$1 million to NT$1.5 million, while in others, it is worth between NT$3 million and NT$5 million. In some "critical votes," the price could rise to NT$8 million to NT$10 million, he said.
