Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (°¨^¤E) said yesterday that he was glad to see more than 6,000 people join the party in the past three months.
Ma was taking part in a ceremony at the party's headquarters in Taipei in which a group of the new recruits took an oath to become KMT members.
"It is good that we have so much new blood," Ma said, adding that the party must continue to improve so as to retain its popularity.
More than 6,000 people joined the party between October and last month, Ma said, and the party currently has 1.06 million members, compared with more than 300,000 members of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP).
But he said that though the KMT garnered more than 50 percent of the votes in last month's "three-in-one" elections for city and county chiefs, city and county councilors and village and township heads, the DPP received 42 percent.
In terms of the proportion of party members, "the DPP had a much better performance than us," he said.
For this reason, the KMT must not become arrogant, but should be modest and serve in earnest to pave the way for returning to power, said the KMT chairman.
The KMT once boasted 2.5 million members at its peak, or almost one tenth of the population.
