Former Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chairman Lin I-hsiung (林義雄) yesterday issued an open letter urging DPP members to support Wong Chin-chu (翁金珠) in the party's upcoming chairpersonship election.
Wong is the most qualified to revive the party's founding spirit, Lin said.
Lin's endorsement came despite acting DPP chairwoman Annette Lu's (呂秀蓮) request that party members or factions not to support specific candidates in the chairperson by-election on the Jan. 15.
Lin persuaded Wong to campaign for the position right after she failed in a bid to be re-elected as Changhua Commissioner in local elections last month.
In his letter, Lin said the significance of the by-election was to restore the DPP's founding spirit, which highlighted "unselfish contribution," and to abandon the contest for power.
The fiasco of the Dec. 3 local government elections showed that people spurn the thirst for power in the DPP, Lin said.
"Are we supposed to close our eyes to the fight for power among leading officials, or bravely ask them to discard their selfishness and re-embrace the founding spirit?" Lin asked.
