Negotiations needed for China official's visit: MAC

    CNA, TAIPEI
    Sunday, Nov 13, 2005, Page 3

The Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) does not intend to block the visit to Taiwan by the Chinese official in charge of Taiwan affairs, but negotiations between the two sides of the Strait must not be neglected, MAC Chairman Joseph Wu (§d°xÀè) said yesterday.

Wu made the remarks regarding a planned visit to Taiwan next month by Chen Yunlin (³¯¶³ªL), director of the Taiwan Affairs Office under the Chinese State Council -- the top Beijing official charting policy toward Taiwan -- at a seminar.

Wu said that the MAC does not mean to ban Chen from coming, but he stressed that two-way negotiations must be held beforehand because it is a "routine procedural prerequisite" now that a think tank operated by the main opposition Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) has filed a visa application for Chen.

Traveling at the head of a delegation of Chinese officials, Chen is slated to take part in an economic forum in the middle of next month in Taipei -- the first such activity jointly organized by the KMT and the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Chen will be the highest ranking CCP official ever to visit Taiwan.
