The Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and the Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) candidates in the Taipei County commissioner race are running neck and neck, according to the latest public opinion poll conducted by the DPP.
Wu Hsiang-jung (§d²»ºa), director of the DPP's Survey Center, called a press conference yesterday to unveil the results of the poll for the Dec. 3 election.
Wu said the poll shows that DPP candidate Luo Wen-jia (ù¤å¹Å) is trailing KMT candidate Chou Hsi-wei (©P¿üÞ³) by only 2.9 percentage points. As the poll's margin of error is around three percentage points, the race is a tie, he said.
The DPP has held the Taipei County commissioner's seat for the last 16 years.
In three previous polls dating back to Aug. 24, Luo trailed Chou by 0.4 percentage points, 1.8 percentage points, and 4.8 percentage points, respectively.
Noting that his party has suffered from the Kaohsiung MRT construction scandal which allegedly involves a former top Presidential Office aide, Wu said that support for the DPP slipped to 19.7 percent early last month from 26.6 percent in late August.
Luo and other DPP candidates in northern Taiwan have been affected by the scandal, Wu said. However, he added that the party's support has rebounded to 22 percent recently.
A total of 77 hopefuls are vying for 23 seats in the city and county chief elections. The pan-greens currently hold nine of the posts while the pan-blue alliance holds 12 and independents hold two.
