"I took the risk of telling the police the gangsters' names because I will face them in court later," said Lin, a friend of Peng's who said he had inside information about the alleged blackmailing, when he left the police department yesterday afternoon.
Lin said that to his knowledge, at least three criminal rings claimed to possess a VCD recording of Peng having sex with a woman, in an effort to blackmail Peng. He refused to tell reporters the gangsters' names.

"Peng thought the matter would be resolved after he paid the money to gangsters and took the VCD back, but a leak of a copy of the VCD made the situation drag on," Lin said.

According to the Taipei police, people familiar with the VCD have alleged that the woman who is recorded in the act of having sex with Peng is Lu's niece, actress Lu Ching (
Peng and Lu acted together in a drama aired on Sanlih Entertainment Television (三立電視).
Police said they have heard allegations that Lu Ching and her boyfriend conspired to secretly film Peng.
Lu Chao-chin and Lu Ching have both denied any involvement in the scandal.
On Sunday, after media speculation on the VCD reached a fever pitch, Peng held a press conference admitting that he had been blackmailed. But Peng insisted that the embarrassing VCD showed him masturbating in a hotel room, not having sex with a woman.
Police said Peng's refusal to reveal the blackmailers' identities and how much he paid them was making the probe more difficult.
For his part, Peng said he paid the blackmailers because he thought police would not have helped him resolve the situation.

Peng -- an actor, host of a popular TV variety show and pop music composer -- recently quit his job as show host and actor in a drama series on Sanlih Entertainment Television, in a sudden move that sparked immediate concern and speculation.

A group of Taiwanese-American and Tibetan-American students at Harvard University on Saturday disrupted Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng’s (謝鋒) speech at the school, accusing him of being responsible for numerous human rights violations. Four students — two Taiwanese Americans and two from Tibet — held up banners inside a conference hall where Xie was delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the Harvard Kennedy School China Conference 2024. In a video clip provided by the Coalition of Students Resisting the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), Taiwanese-American Cosette Wu (吳亭樺) and Tibetan-American Tsering Yangchen are seen holding banners that together read:

Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. As of 3:30pm yesterday, Tainan’s Yujing District (玉井) had recorded the day’s highest temperature of 39.7°C, though the measurement will not be included in Taiwan’s official heat records since Yujing is an automatic rather than manually operated weather station, the CWA said. Highs recorded in other areas were 38.7°C in Kaohsiung’s Neimen District (內門), 38.2°C in Chiayi City and 38.1°C in Pingtung’s Sandimen Township (三地門), CWA data showed. The spell of scorching
