    Taipei Arts Festival opens
    The Seventh Taipei Arts Festival, organized by the city's Department of Culture Affairs, kicks off tomorrow and runs through the end of the month. This year's theme is "Oriental Avant-garde." More than 30 groups will perform, including the Tai-Gu Tales Dance Theater and Headspring Theater, both which choreographed new works just for the festival. Groups from India, Japan and Indonesia will also perform. Liao Hsien-hao (¹ù«w¯E), head of the Department of Culture Affairs, said that the festival will provide opportunities for local performers to gain international recognition.

    Motorcyclist fatalities rise
    More than half of those who died in traffic accidents in the last two years were motorcyclists, according to statistics released by the Ministry of Transportation and Communications. Motorcyclists accounted for 53 percent of all accident deaths in 2003. More than 2,000 motorcyclists died in accidents both last year and the year before. People in the 18 to 24 age group accounted for the largest share of the deaths. The ministry said there were 1,138 traffic deaths in the first half of this year, down 10 percent from the same period a year ago. At the same time, the number of accidents increased by 9 percent to 72,000.

    Rummage sale at TAS
    The Taipei American School (TAS) Orphanage Club is holding its 35th annual rummage sale tomorrow from 10am to 5pm in the school lobby. A variety of items ranging from toys and sport equipment to appliances and clothing are available at bargain prices. A flea market will also be held in the cafeteria from 10am to 3pm.
