Prime minister to address `taishang' during holiday


Premier Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) will brief Taiwanese businesspeople operating in China, known locally as taishang, on progress in the government's China policy initiatives during a Mid-Autumn Festival gathering.

Hsieh may also announce new China policy initiatives on the occasion, said You Ying-lung (游盈隆), secretary-general of the quasi-official Strait Exchange Foundation (SEF). According to You, the SEF will join forces with the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC), the Ministry of Economic Affairs (MOEA), the National Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and the National Federation of Industries in organizing a package of activities on Tuesday and Wednesday for taishang who have returned to Taiwan for the festival.

Among the activities will be a dinner on Wednesday, You said. Hsieh and MAC Chairman Joseph Wu (吳釗燮) will attend.
