People First Party (PFP) Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜) returns to Taiwan from the US early this morning amid plans to launch a round of meetings to cement cooperation in the pan-blue camp -- including meeting Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) and former chairman Lien Chan (連戰) -- and presiding over an economic forum to be held in China in mid-September.
PFP caucus whip Hwang Yih-jiau (黃義交) yesterday confirmed the rumors, saying that Soong will first focus on the PFP's cooperation with the KMT in the year-end elections and campaign for the PFP's candidates after coming back to Taiwan.
Soong went to Europe and the US for his yearly vacation and visited his family in the US on July 14. Soong was absent from the KMT chairmanship elections on July 16 and his re-election as PFP chairman on July 23.
After a short stay in Taipei, Soong is scheduled to travel to Shanghai to preside over an economic forum hosted by the PFP from Sep.14 to Sep. 16.
One of the highlights of the schedule is Soong's meeting with Ma. However, "the PFP does not see the necessity of or any urgency for having a meeting between Soong and Ma at this point," Hwang said.
