Critics say KMT in no-win situation over `stolen' assets

ILL-GOTTEN GAINS The KMT's recent sale of a piece of land in Muzha has renewed demands that its `stolen' assets be returned to the government

BY MO YAN-CHIH  /  STAFF REPORTER

While former KMT chairman Lien Chan (連戰) promised to deal with the asset issue and the process for the Muzha sale began during his term, it was Ma's decision to seal the deal with Yun Lih Construction Corp, and it is Ma's city government that will decide on the rezoning. If the city approves the rezoning, criticism of Ma for helping the KMT profit from Taipei's assets is sure to occur. If permission is refused, however, the KMT may be accused of cheating the company by selling a property that can't be developed or resold.

Chin said that the basic problem is that it is impossible for Ma to solve the party-asset problem with "fairness and justice," because the KMT's assets were gained unfairly.

"The only fair and just way for Ma to clean up the assets issue is to return all the stolen property to the government," Chin said. "Any other way will only hurt the KMT more and make it difficult for Ma to win the 2008 presidential election," Chin said.
