LA activists hope stamps will raise Taiwan's profile

Pro-independence activists unveiled a set of four commemorative stamps in Los Angeles on Friday as part of a "call Taiwan, Taiwan" campaign to rectify its official designation.
Shen Pei-chih (¨H°ö§Ó), secretary-general of the "Please Support Taiwan to Join the United Nations" campaign, one of the four sponsors, said that they hope to have the four commemorative postage stamps, with no monetary value, posted on mail sent around the world to raise Taiwan's international profile.
Shen said the printing of the postage stamps, including one to commemorate the 228 Incident, was inspired by the government's earlier decision to add the word "Taiwan" to Republic of China passports to avoid confusion with Chinese passports.
He said the postage stamps were printed in Taiwan and were originally meant to be unveiled in Taipei and Los Angeles simultaneously. However, the unveiling in Taipei was postponed until the middle of the month because of the onslaught of Typhoon Matsa. The sponsors will rent a pavilion at the 18th Asian International Stamp Exhibition in Taipei from Aug. 19-24 to promote the stamps.
