Book fair to showcase four European cultures

PICK A BOOK At Taiwan's biggest book exhibit next year, local readers will have a chance to decide which author's works will be featured at the event

Next year's Taipei International Book Exhibition will have a special theme pavilion featuring the cultures of four European countries, organizers of the annual book fair said yesterday. The four countries are France, Germany, Greece and Poland.

The 2006 exhibition, to be held from Feb. 7 through Feb. 12 at the Taipei World Trade Center, is being organized by the Taipei Book Fair Foundation, which is jointly managed by 18 of Taiwan's leading publishing houses.

The organizers said that they plan to invite one accomplished writer from each of the four European countries to the exhibition to meet with their Taiwanese readers. The writers will also chair discussion sessions and sign books.

The organizers said they welcome recommendations from the public for new writers from the four European countries suitable for inviting, adding that writers whose books have been translated into Chinese would be ideal choices.

However, this would not be a necessary condition, and writers whose books have had great influence and have won international acclaim would also be included in deliberations. Final decisions will be made after consulting the exhibitors from the four European countries, the organizers said.

The public can submit their recommendations to The Taipei Book Fair Foundation before Aug. 10 on its Web site at, or by calling (02) 2546-7580, extension 106.
