Chen sets Americas tour

President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) will be going on a tour of Central America at the end of next month, the Presidential Office announced yesterday.

The president will be traveling to Central America to attend the fifth ROC-Central America Summit in Nicaragua at the end of next month, the Presidential Office said.

While the additional destinations Chen will visit and the duration of the tour have not yet been set, said the office, Chen will be making transit stop in the US.

Other possible countries Chen may visit include diplomatic allies St. Christopher and Nevis and St. Vincent and The Grenadines, the Presidential Office said.

The first ROC-Central America Summit was held in El Salvador in September 1997, and was attended by former president Lee Teng-hui (李登輝). Since, then, the summits have been held every two years.

Chen attended the third summit in 2001 in El Salvador, where he had talks with the leaders of Belize, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras, Nicaragua and Panama. The second and fourth summits were held in Taiwan.
