Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) said yesterday that he will stick to the Chinese Nationalist Party's (KMT) party line, as he always has, to protect the Republic of China if elected party chairman.

Wang made the remarks at a campaign stop marking the establishment of a local chapter of his supporters in Tainan.

Emphasizing that he will stand by the party line that promotes democracy, freedom and reform, Wang, one of the party's five vice chairmen, said that he will fully devote his energy to serving the party to help make the ROC a more democratic, prosperous, more secure and free country should he win the chairmanship.

A KMT chairman must know how to use the majority advantage of the pan-blue alliance in the Legislative Yuan to implement the party's policies and help the party win back power, he said, reiterating that the KMT must engage in reform and reach out to people if it wants to defeat the ruling Democratic Progressive Party in the 2008 presidential election.

Wang is set to face Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九), also a KMT vice chairman, in the main opposition party's chairmanship election set for July 16. Incumbent KMT Chairman Lien Chan (連戰) is scheduled to leave the post in August.

Ma also has launched his own campaign for the party's top post, claiming that the race is critical for the KMT's chances in the 2008 presidential election.
