"They are treating our life, health and personal safety as a joke," she said. "The impact of mad cow disease is more serious than that of the `funeral food' incident."
Hsieh was referring to the false accusation lodged by PFP Taipei City Councilor Mike Wang (王育誠), who alleged that local restaurants resold food purchased from funeral parlors. Wang later admitted to making the whole thing up.
In an effort to reassure the public, the American Institute in Taiwan (AIT) yesterday said US beef has been and continues to be safe for human consumption.
"Recent press reports about a possible second case of BSE [otherwise known as mad cow disease] are misleading. This is not a new case, or a new animal, but a re-test of an old sample taken during an extensive cattle herd surveillance program before December 2004," said a statement issued by the AIT.
