President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and his family were all smiles when his daughter, Chen Hsing-yu (陳幸妤), had the tassel moved from one side of her black cap to the other in a special ceremony marking her graduation from National Taiwan University's Graduate Institute of Clinical Dentistry yesterday.
Chen Hsing-yu, along with 41 others, completed their master's program. They were joined by 40 who finished their undergraduate studies and were awarded a bachelor's degree.
The president, his wife Wu Shu-jen (吳淑珍), son-in-law Zhao Chien-ming (趙建銘) and two grandchildren sat in the front row as they witnessed Hsing-yu receiving a blessing from her professors. Zhao videotaped the event.
The president and first lady left immediately after the ceremony without making any remarks.
The president later told an American visitor at the Presidential Office that his whole family was delighted, and his wife and he were especially pleased to see their child having grown up and achieved academically.
Chen Hsing-yu majored in dental palate correction, meeting course requirements in three years. Institute Director Lan Wan-hung (藍萬烘) said she was a hard-working student who loved to read. He said she had published a paper on palate correction and two more were on the way, all written in English.
"She certainly has had some pressure as we [NTU] do give students pressure. However, she surmounted the difficulties," Lan said.
