Praising President Chen Shui-bian (
"There were once noises regarding the cross-strait issues. We hope the dust will settle soon after the [recent] `China fever,'" she said.
"After following Chen for five years, I can assure you that he is a serious and hard-working leader ... please be confident in the promises we have given to the people," she said.
Lu made the remarks yesterday in a speech delivered at Hsueh-pa National Park's Wu-ling Farm.
"Both the president and I will continue to push for democratic reform, assert the nation's sovereignty and build Taiwan into a great and beautiful nation," Lu said.
To highlight Lu's slogan of, "National Health Go Go Go," Lu yesterday led a delegation on a hike in the nation's famous Wu-ling Farm resort.
She was also marking her fifth anniversary as the vice president.
In a bid to showcase a healthy lifestyle, Lu also practiced tai chi with famous singer Pai Ping-ping (
"It has been five years since Chen and I began to serve the people as the nation's leaders. While Chen is helping to recycle today, I chose to visit this place to share my experiences and the beauty of this farm with you all," Lu said in a brief speech after doing tai chi.
As this year has been designated the "year of health," Lu chose to spend her Lunar New Year holiday in February at Wu-ling Farm, where many types of flowers were blossoming, she said.
Because she was so touched by the beauty of the landscape, she decided to invite some friends to visit the resort on the fifth anniversary of her inauguration.
Members of the delegation included Overseas Chinese Affairs Commission Chairwoman Chang Fu-mei (
"Life is limited. Why do we rush through our life? What is happiness?" Lu said.
Lu then took the opportunity to show her regret over Chi Mei Group chairman Hsu Wen-lung's (許文龍) statement in March, in which he said that he supported the "one China" principle and Beijing's enactment of its "Anti-Secession" Law.
"There is an entrepreneur who used to love Taiwan and has been famous for enjoying life through fishing. But I am afraid he has ruined his reputation by releasing the statement [in March]," Lu said.
"It tells us that being good at fishing doesn't equal happiness. Happiness also involves one's value of life," she said.
Lu will stay at the farm for three days to do more hiking and visit Chichawan Stream, the famous home of the Formosa landlocked salmon.
Former Czech Republic-based Taiwanese researcher Cheng Yu-chin (鄭宇欽) has been sentenced to seven years in prison on espionage-related charges, China’s Ministry of State Security announced yesterday. THE HAWAII FACTOR: While a 1965 opinion said an attack on Hawaii would not trigger Article 5, the text of the treaty suggests the state is covered, the report says NATO could be drawn into a conflict in the Taiwan Strait if Chinese forces attacked the US mainland or Hawaii, a NATO Defense College report published on Monday says. The report, written by James Lee, an assistant research fellow at Academia Sinica’s Institute of European and American Studies, states that under certain conditions a Taiwan contingency could trigger Article 5 of NATO, under which an attack against any member of the alliance is considered an attack against all members, necessitating a response. Article 6 of the North Atlantic Treaty specifies that an armed attack in the territory of any member in Europe,

XINJIANG: Officials are conducting a report into amending an existing law or to enact a special law to prohibit goods using forced labor Taiwan is mulling an amendment prohibiting the importation of goods using forced labor, similar to the Uyghur Forced Labor Prevention Act (UFLPA) passed by the US Congress in 2021 that imposed limits on goods produced using forced labor in China’s Xinjiang region. A government official who wished to remain anonymous said yesterday that as the US customs law explicitly prohibits the importation of goods made using forced labor, in 2021 it passed the specialized UFLPA to limit the importation of cotton and other goods from China’s Xinjiang Uyghur region.
