■ Politics Ma and Wang campaign
Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) promised yesterday that should he be elected Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) chairman on July 16, he will see that at least one Central Standing Committee meeting a month is held in either central or southern Taiwan. On the campaign trail in Pintung, Ma said that he would ensure that the KMT's presence is equal in all regions of the country. He also promised to establish better communication links with party members in the center and south. Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) also campaigned over the weekend in Kaohsiung. The squabbles between the two men over the election continued yesterday, with Ma saying that he believed it was up to the party central to bus supporters to the polls. Wang said it was okay for members to take the initiative to bus supporters themselves.

PFP official heads to China
People First Party (PFP) organizational department head Huang Pan-kung (黃泮宮) left on a trip to China yesterday to arrange details for the delegation the PFP legislative caucus will be sending to China next week. Given the wide-spread speculation over the timing of a possible tour of China by PFP Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜), the PFP said that Huang was going to China to pave the way for an agricultural delegation the party plans to send to China. The delegation will be headed by Legislator Tsai Shen-chia (蔡勝佳). Tsai has said the delegation will consult with the Council of Agriculture and the Mainland Affairs Council before it leaves in order to understand the feasibility of its proposed policies.

Two policemen attacked
Two men on a scooter attacked two policemen in Huchien, Taipei County yesterday afternoon, killing one of them and stealing their weapons. Hung Chung-nan (洪重男), 30, was killed while his partner Chang Ta-hao (張大皞), 31, was seriously injured. Police said the attackers were wearing helmets and riding a yellow scooter. They said the attackers came upon the two officers patrolling in the streets and pulled long knives out of their bags and stabbed the officers in the back. Police believe the officers' guns were the motive for the attack. A manhunt for the assailants has been launched.

Cold front moves in
Hot sunny days in the north came to an end yesterday and forecasters warned yesterday that residents in the north and east should carry their umbrellas with them for the next few days. The Central Weather Bureau said the weather in the next few days would be affected by the arrival of a cold front today. The temperature in the north today is expected to drop as low as 21C. Showers are forecast for the north, east and northeast through Thursday. Kinmen and Matsu are likely to experience heavy fog .

Hsieh pushes co-existence
Taiwan has encountered a bottleneck in its development and should promote a co-existence mechanism to make a breakthrough, Premier Frank Hsieh (謝長廷) said yesterday. Addressing a gathering of more than 1,000 college students organized by the World Leader Education Foundation, Hsieh said that Taiwan today needs a new institution and new models for interaction to achieve the goal of co-existence. Co-existence will make Taiwan a better society and "a miracle for mankind," he said.
