Jelly-like candies recalled after child chokes to death

    AFP, TAIPEI
    Friday, Apr 01, 2005, Page 4

Authorities have ordered the recall of all mini-cup jelly candies after a Taiwanese girl choked to death on the snack in China earlier this month, officials said yesterday.

Members of the Taiwan Confectionery, Biscuit and Floury Food Industry Association had agreed to immediately recall the jelly candies with a diameter of less then 3.1cm, the so-called mini-cup jelly, the Department of Health said in a statement.

"All members will also abide by the rule not to manufacture any jelly product with a diameter of less then 3.1cm," it added.

The order was made after a Taiwanese businessman living in Shanghai complained to authorities in Taipei that his 19 month-old daughter choked after eating a mini-cup jelly of a famous Taiwan brand.

The jelly maker defended itself by saying that it no longer produces the small jelly snacks and it had nothing to do with the Chinese food company carrying its name.

Accidents involving children choking on mini-cup jellies have been reported in the US, South Korea and China.
