PFP vice chairman to attend Su Tseng-chang's ceremony

Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) chairman-elect Su Tseng-chang (蘇貞昌) yesterday confirmed that People First Party (PFP) Vice Chairman Chang Chao-hsiung (張昭雄) will attend a ceremony celebrating his new post next Tuesday.

"In the new year, we [the ruling and opposition parties] should grasp new opportunities and hold sensible talks. There are no taboos between the parties because we both want to open the door to negotiations with China," Su said as he worshipped at a temple in Taipei County yesterday.

Su said Chang had promised to attend the ceremony as PFP vice chairman and as a friend.

"He told me on the phone that we are longtime friends and he will be there for sure," Su said.

In an effort to patch up relations, the DPP issued invitations to opposition party leaders for Tuesday's ceremony. The Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT), whose chairman Lien Chan (連戰) is overseas on holiday, has not yet revealed who will attend the ceremony. The PFP has confirmed that Chairman James Soong (宋楚瑜) will not be present.

Efforts at party reconciliation are expected to restart as soon as the Lunar New Year holiday is over.
