Presidential Office Secretary-General Yu Shyi-kun yesterday said he hoped a meeting between President Chen Shui-bian (³¯¤ô«ó) and opposition leaders could take place when the legislature convenes after the Lunar New Year.

"Since the Lunar New Year holidays will be here in less than three days, it would be rather difficult to arrange a meeting before the holidays," Yu said during a press conference at the Presidential Office.

"It is our hope that the meeting can be arranged after the Lunar New Year holidays or when the new legislature convenes," he said.

Yu that if the meeting was held at that time, it would allow for smoother passage of bills in the new legislature. The session commences on Feb. 25.

To avoid giving the impression that such meetings will involve under-the-table deals, Yu said that a press conference should be called afterwards to outline what had been discussed.

Yu that Chen wants to forge ties with the opposition parties to facilitate implementation of his major policy and reform initiatives.
