Vice Premier Yeh Chu-lan (葉菊蘭) said yesterday she will be pleased to see Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) assist in breaking the lingering stalemate across the Taiwan Strait.
Yeh made the remarks after Wang said that if he is re-elected legislative speaker, he is willing to visit China to get cross-strait relations moving forward.
Noting that peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait has been one of the government's top policy goals, Yeh said she believes President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) will be happy to see Wang contribute his wisdom and energy to the issue.
Wang said during at a New Year's eve countdown gathering with local reporters that if he is re-elected legislative speaker, he will push the new legislature to pass a resolution to create a special task force to work for cross-strait reconciliation and will lead its members to China.
The new legislature will be inaugurated Feb. 1. According to constitutional provisions, new lawmakers will elect a a speaker.
