US congressman to arrive today for a four-day visit

CNA , TAIPEI

US Congressman Steve Chabot, co-chairman of the pro-Taiwan US Congressional Taiwan Caucus, is scheduled to arrive in Taipei today for a four-day visit.

Chabot, a Republican from Ohio, was originally scheduled to arrive in Taiwan yesterday but rescheduled his itinerary when his Taiwan-bound flight was delayed.

According to Minister of Foreign Affairs Mark Chen (陳唐山), Chabot is visiting Taiwan mainly to observe Saturday's legislative elections.

He is also scheduled to meet President Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) tomorrow to exchange views on a wide range of topics, with Taiwan's name-change plan for its overseas representative offices and state-run enterprises expected to be a focus of the talks.

Chabot and the other Con-gressional Taiwan Caucus co-chairmen recently wrote a letter to Chen expressing their support for Taiwan's plan to change the name of the Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the US to the Taiwan Representative Office in the US.

In the letter, Chabot said that a new name for the office that includes the word "Taiwan" would better reflect the characteristics of the government in Taiwan, and that he will extend whatever help he can to facilitate the name-change effort.

Chabot is also expected to meet with the foreign affairs minister for talks.
