Dozens of public officials censured by watchdog

CNA , TAIPEI

The Control Yuan said yesterday it impeached a total of 48 public officials in the first 10 months of this year, with officials from the Ministry of National Defense accounting for the lion's share.

Ku Teng-mei (古登美), a Control Yuan member, made the remarks during an inspection tour of the Executive Yuan along with her colleagues.

Quoting constitutional provisions, Ku said the Control Yuan is authorized to censure and impeach local and central government level public officials, as well as rectify administrative agencies under the Executive Yuan.

This year, Ku said, similar administrative problems involving public security, the 921 Earthquake-related reconstruction projects, mudslides and sewerage engineering, occurred repeatedly.

"We hope the relevant administrative departments can make efforts at resolving these problems once and for all, " Ku said during a meeting with Cabinet members.

"Some of the problems involve different departments. We hope the Executive Yuan can coordinate and integrate the resources of different agencies to facilitate the solving of relevant problems," she added.

Among the public officials impeached between January and Oct. 14 were from the defense ministry, five from the Ministry of Transportation and Communications (MOTC) and four from the Council of Labor Affairs.

During the 10-month period, the Control Yuan decided in a total of 130 cases to rectify various government agencies' administrative measures.

From February 1999 to last month, 300 public officials were impeached, with 80 coming from the national defense ministry, 38 from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, 24 from the MOTC, 23 from the Ministry of the Interior and 21 from the Ministry of the Justice.

During the same period, the Control Yuan decided in a total of 947 cases to rectify various government agencies' administrative measures.

The six-year tenure of the incumbent Control Yuan members will expire Jan. 31, 2005.
