In the Tuesday, Nov. 23 edition of the newspaper, the story on page 3 entitled `Chen plays the `ideology' card before election,' quoted Hsu Yung-ming as saying that when running for re-election as Taipei mayor in 2002, [President] Chen [Shui-bian] tried to stimulate ethnic differences and used independence versus unification tactics, but he lost that election.

What Hsu said was that when Chen was campaigning for DPP mayoral candidate Lee Ying-yuan in 2002, Chen tried to boost Lee's poor showing by stimulating ethnic distinctions and using unification versus independence tactics, but those tactics had no great effect on the race.
