Gay pride returns next month with a splash and no cash

    CNA, TAIPEI

An alternate lifestyle parade will be held in Taipei on Nov. 6, but will not be financially supported by the city government as was the case last year, an organizer of the event said yesterday.

The 2004 Taiwan Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Parade will be an ad hoc arrangement since the city is not funding the event this year, according to a spokesman for the organizing committee, Wu Hsu-liang (§Åºü¼Ù).

Wu said the parade will feature colorful and dazzling costumes to show the community's rich diversity, and will highlight the need for society to respect all individuals, regardless of their sexual orientation.

Wu said in a statement that as residents of Taipei, gays and lesbians need to come out and be a part of the city.

They also must understand that they have the responsibility to teach the next generation that there is no "wrong" identity and that differences must be respected, he said.

The parade will set off from the Chiang Kai-shek Memorial and wind through the 228 Peace Park to the Red Theater in Ximending.
