Vice President Lu visits ex-first lady in hospital

Vice President Annette Lu (呂秀蓮) paid a short visit yesterday to former first lady Faina Chiang (蔣方良) who checked into Taipei Veterans General Hospital on Wednesday suffering from inflammation of the windpipe and acute asthma.

Lu said that Chiang is greatly respected, and although a native of Russia, she spent most of her life in Taiwan with her husband, former president Chiang Ching-kuo (蔣經國), and their children.

Although Faina Chiang, who is 88, has led a secluded life over the past decade, she deserves the concern of all the people of Taiwan, particularly during now that she is ill, Lu said. Doctors at the hospital said that Faina Chiang developed breathing problems on Wednesday stemming from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, but she is now in stable condition. Dr. Feng Chang-feng (馮長風) said that there is no timetable for her release since she is still undergoing testing.

According to Chiang Fang Chih-yi (蔣方智怡), Faina Chiang's daughter-in-law, the former first lady has had a poor appetite recently and became lethargic on Wednesday, prompting the family to rush her to the hospital.

Faina Chiang suffered a stroke in October 1994 and still suffers from atherosclerosis, emphysema and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Her health began to decline after her husband died in 1988 following a heart attack. Her eldest son, Chiang Hsiao-wen (蔣孝文), died the next year, and her second son, Chiang Hsiao-wu (蔣孝武), died in 1991 shortly after retiring as Taiwan's representative to Japan.
