Ma ushers in his new bureaucracy with a nice big hug

    CNA, TAIPEI
    Tuesday, Aug 03, 2004, Page 2

Taipei Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) yesterday swore in two deputy mayors and six departmental chiefs in a reshuffle of his administrative team.

Speaking after the swearing-in ceremony, Ma welcomed the new members to his administration, while lauding the achievements of the outgoing heads, saying that they were changing roles rather than leaving.

The two deputy mayors recruited by Ma are not strangers to the city. Chin Fu-chung (金溥聰), a professor at National Cheng Chi University, was a former chief of the city government's Information Department.

Another deputy mayor, Yeh Chin-chuan (葉金川), a professor of medicine at Tzu Chi University, was a former chief of the city's Department of Health. He gained some publicity in April last year when he entered a hospital quarantined because of the SARS outbreak to lead the fight against the disease.

Saying that his administration would continue to tap their experience and expertise, Ma presented an "advisor certificate" to each of the outgoing chiefs before embracing them.
