Military academy health scare over, says DOH

The Department of Health said yesterday that the outbreak of high fever among cadets at the Military Academy in Fengshan, Kaohsiung has eased.

Center for Disease Control Deputy Director Shih Wen-yi (施文儀) said that no new cases have been reported at the school since last Sunday, adding that the alarm could now be lifted.

Twenty-four cadets came down with high fever recently within a short period of time. One 20-year-old cadet, surnamed Yen, died, while the 23 others were hospitalized. Only one remains in hospital, while those who have checked out have returned to school and are undergoing quarantine.

Shih said Yen was first infected with a virus and then a pseudomonas bacterium. Preliminary tests have ruled out the possibility of meningitis, influenza, severe acute respiratory syndrome, or legionnaire's disease as the possible cause of the cadets' fever.
