Donations from Taiwan help start Dominican hospital

CNA , Panama City

A hospital and a vocational training center established as a result of donations from Taiwan will be inaugurated in the next two days in the Dominican Republic for the benefits of the people of the Caribbean nation, diplomatic sources said yesterday.

The inaugurations epitomize the cordiality and solidity of relations between the Republic of China and the Dominican Republic, the Taiwan Embassy in Santo Domingo said in a press statement.

The vocational training center, housed in the Institute of Technology of Latin America in the Dominican Republic capital of Santo Domingo, will be inaugurated today.

Dominican Republic President Rafael Hipolito Mejia Dominquez will cut the ribbon to open the center at a ceremony to be jointly hosted by Taiwan Ambassador John Feng (馮寄台) and Carlos Despradel, a department chief at the Dominican Republic Presidential Office.

The Taiwan government has donated US$8 million for the establishment of the vocational training center, which will offer training courses in automated control, computer-aided design, drawing and manufacturing, digital machinery and plastic engineering.

Thirteen Dominican teachers have already completed a three-month training program in Taiwan and a six-member Taiwan advisory delegation will arrive in Santo Domingo early next month to assist in training seed instructors.

Initially, the vocational training center will mainly provide training courses for vocational school teachers. In the future, the center will offer training programs for businesspeople in the Dominican Republic.

The hospital, located in the southwestern Dominican Republic province of Azua, will be inaugurated tomorrow. Mejia will also attend that ceremony, which will be hosted by Feng and Dominican Republic Public Health Minister Jose Rodriguez Soldevila.
