Wang floats construction bill relief fund

CNA , NANTOU

Legislative Yuan Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (王金平) suggested yesterday that rehabilitation and reconstruction work in the wake of the devastating floods that were triggered by Tropical Storm Mindulle be included in the government's "10 Major Construction Projects" program.

Viewing the devastation that the floods have caused to many rural areas around the country, which is far greater than initial estimates, Wang suggested that the scope, items and budgets concerning the 10 projects -- originally designed to be completed within the next five years for an outlay of NT$500 billion (US$14.7 billion) -- be readjusted to include budget plans for the post-flood reconstruction.

Wang said he would see to it that the Legislative Yuan supports the plan if the administration considers it necessary.

Wang, accompanied by several Chinese Nationlist Party (KMT) legislators, made whirlwind visits to Sungho, Lishan, Jenai and Hsinyi mountain townships that were hardest hit by the flash floods, mudslides and landslides triggered by Mindulle.

According to the latest estimates provided by the Council of Agriculture, damage caused by the storm to the sector amounted to NT$8.4 billion as of yesterday, the second-highest damage level on record.
