Chunghwa Telecom Co's (中華電信) Hinet 2004 Online Games Tournament was launched yesterday during celebrations for its eighth anniversary of its corporatization.

The company has run a similar competition every year for the past three years.

This year the online gaming competition has attracted 26,000 contestants with 1,600 registering to compete for the right to represent Taiwan at the upcoming World Cyber Games (WCG) in August. In previous years, Taiwanese participants in the WCG brought home top awards in various categories.

The Hinet 2004 Online Games Tournament has also made an effort to include participants of all ages this year, setting up a senior citizen's category for gamers over the age of 50 and a family category for children to team up with parents. Cash awards to be given out to winners total NT$5 million with the top winner receiving NT$50,000. The finals will be held on Aug 14 and 15.

In addition, company chairman Hochen Tan (賀陳旦) announced the start of several new services that the company will gradually deploy throughout its eighth year following corporatization. Following Tuesday's announcement regarding the launch of "fiber-to-the house" and "fiber-to-the-business" services, which would make optical internet connection possible for individual users in the next few months, Hochen further announced that the company would soon be offering an information hotline service to provide assistance for cellphone subscribers seeking road directions or store addresses.

In addition, a new movie hotline service will allow Chunghwa Telecom mobile phone subscribers to access movie schedules and to make reservations at various theaters via text messaging.

"With privatization policies in place, Chunghwa Telecom must learn to rise up to meet the challenges," Vice Minister of Transportation and Communications Tsai Tui (蔡堆) said yesterday.
