DPP member complains of Chinese harrassment

    CNA, TAIPEI
    Sunday, Jun 06, 2004, Page 4

A Taiwanese businessman in China who is a supporter of the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said yesterday that he has suffered "political interference" from the Chinese authorities.

Sheng Kuo-jung (¨H°êºa), the new director of the DPP's Taichung County chapter, who has investments in China, claimed that the Chinese authorities have been scrutinizing his tax payment records for his enterprise in Jiangsu Province, a car component factory with some 300 employees, since last November.

Sheng admitted that he has no way of stopping the Chinese authorities from auditing his taxes, but he expressed hope that the interaction between both sides of the Taiwan Strait can improve in the future.

Beijing has never hidden the fact that it does not welcome pro-DPP Taiwanese businesspeople with investments in China, accusing them of using profits gained in China to finance the independence movement in Taiwan.

Recently, the Chinese government, through its official mouthpiece, the People's Daily, named some of these businesspeople, among them Chi Mei Group chairman Hsu Wen-lung (³\¤åÀs).

Sheng, who was sworn in as DPP Taichung County chapter chief yesterday, was also named.
