Lion not culpable in fatal attack on theme park painter

The Hsinchu Prosecutor's Office said yesterday that a lion is an animal that cannot be held accountable for its actions, and that the lion's keepers should take responsibility for the creature's actions.
The statement referred to the mauling death Friday of Tang Kuei-nan (´ö¶Q¨k), 55, a worker painting a railing of the wild beast zone at Leofoo Wonder World..
Prosecutor Huang Chien-chi (¶À«ØÄQ) arrived at the scene for an inspection Saturday and conducted an initial arraignment on a janitor, Lai Hwei-wen (¿à½÷¤å), who witnessed the incident.
The prosecutor said the lion is not subject to by criminal law and should not be killed or beaten, as some people had demanded.
The prosecutor said he will investigate further.
The Leofoo spokesman said the park will take "moral responsibility" and give the family NT$100,000 (US$2,985).
