Lien chats with the nation's new envoy to the US

After meeting yesterday with Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Chairman Lien Chan (連戰), David Lee (李大維) -- slated to become Taiwan's top representative to the US -- said that Lien had encouraged him to be of service to the nation in his new post.

"Emphasizing to me that the mission to the US is the most important and arduous job in Taiwanese diplomacy, and one that is extremely important to the nation's interests and well-being, Chairman Lien encouraged me to strive to do good work for the Republic of China," Lee said after a low-profile visit with Lien yesterday at KMT headquarters in Taipei.

Lee, currently the nation's top representative to the EU, flew to Brussels yesterday after arriving in Taipei last Tuesday and presenting a report on Taiwan-EU relations to the Legislative Yuan's Foreign and Overseas Chinese Affairs Committee.

If the US, as expected, approves of Lee's appointment, he will replace Chen Chien-jen (程建人), Taiwan's current de facto ambassador to the US, next month.

A member of the KMT and a student of Lien's when he was an undergraduate at National Taiwan University's department of political science, Lee said the meeting had been initiated by Lien.

"Lien is my former superior and teacher, so of course I came and gave him my regards," Lee said, adding that there is nothing unusual about his keeping in contact with Lien, considering they have known each for 30 years.

Lee said that Lien had displayed a positive attitude toward his decision and recognized that Lee wanted to perform a service.
