The Chinese Nationalist Party's (KMT) Strategy and Discourse Unit (策略論述小組) is considering the idea of scrapping the "one China" principle as the basis of its cross-strait policy and replacing it with independence, according to KMT Legislator Apollo Chen (陳學聖).
Chen said that the unit is also considering the idea of establishing diplomatic neutrality for the nation in order to maintain equilibrium in relationships with China and the US.
"The Strategy and Discourse Unit is keeping all options open," Chen said.
Chen is a member of the unit, which is co-headed by KMT Vice Chairmen Vincent Siew (
Chen said that the unit would make final recommendations on the issues at its meeting next week. The recommendations will then be forwarded to the party's Central Standing Committee, the party's highest-ranking decision-making body.
Noting that Wang had said before the presidential election that the party would not rule out independence as a possible element of its cross-strait platform, Chen said the proposals before the unit are ideas that are developing according to the flow of cross-strait economic and political developments.
KMT Legislator Lwo Shih-hsiung (羅世雄), another member of the unit, said that a poll conducted by the party suggested that a majority of the public -- supporters of both the pan-blue and pan-green camps -- is in favor of a "neutral Taiwan."
Saying that most young people today do not think that China is part of the Republic of China, Lwo said that the party needs to alter its "one China" policy in order to vie for young people's support.
Meanwhile, in view of overt disagreements over the party's proposed merger with the People First Party (PFP), Ting Shou-chung (丁守中), director of the KMT's Organization and Development Affairs Committee, said yesterday that it is likely that the party will postpone its national party congress meeting for a month or two.
The meeting is now scheduled for July.
The merger plan is to be considered at the congress.
Despite the possible delay, Ting said that it is still the party's ultimate goal to address the merger plan before the legislative election in December.
"The meeting is likely to be delayed a month or two. The direction [of the plan to merge before the year-end legislative election] basically remains the same for now," Ting said.

A group of Taiwanese-American and Tibetan-American students at Harvard University on Saturday disrupted Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng’s (謝鋒) speech at the school, accusing him of being responsible for numerous human rights violations. Four students — two Taiwanese Americans and two from Tibet — held up banners inside a conference hall where Xie was delivering a speech at the opening ceremony of the Harvard Kennedy School China Conference 2024. In a video clip provided by the Coalition of Students Resisting the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), Taiwanese-American Cosette Wu (吳亭樺) and Tibetan-American Tsering Yangchen are seen holding banners that together read:

Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. As of 3:30pm yesterday, Tainan’s Yujing District (玉井) had recorded the day’s highest temperature of 39.7°C, though the measurement will not be included in Taiwan’s official heat records since Yujing is an automatic rather than manually operated weather station, the CWA said. Highs recorded in other areas were 38.7°C in Kaohsiung’s Neimen District (內門), 38.2°C in Chiayi City and 38.1°C in Pingtung’s Sandimen Township (三地門), CWA data showed. The spell of scorching
