The nation's four terrestrial television stations will broadcast the Olympic Games in Athens this August using digital signals.
The channels -- Taiwan Television Enterprise Ltd (TTV), China Television Co (CTC), Chinese Television System (CTS) and Formosa Television (FTV), which have been granted rights by International Olympic Committee (IOC) to publicly broadcast the event on television and radio -- are scheduled to switch to digital signals on Tuesday.
"One thing special about this year's Olympic Games is that viewers will be able to enjoy digital broadcasts, which will also enable drivers to watch the Games in their cars," TTV general manager Cheng Yu (鄭優) said at a press conference yesterday to announce the broadcasts.
It will be the first time FTV has broadcast the Games.
"With digital signals, antennas are no longer needed and even remote areas can get reception," said Connie Lin (林育卉), chief executive officer of the Broadcasting Development Fund, an organization that has researched and promoted digital technology in the media.
Digital reception
Viewers interested in receiving digital television signals may contact Chunghwa Telecom Co for installation of a Multi-Media-On-Demand (MOD) set-top box, which allows digital transmission via ADSL.
The four stations have also received the rights from the IOC to use Olympic marks and logos, to produce and provide free promotional items in connection with the Games as well as to publish viewers' guides for the event.
The Chinese Taipei Olympic Committee praised the cooperation among the four stations.
"The fact that these four competitors managed to come together to broadcast the Olympic Games symbolizes the spirit of cooperation the Games represent," committee president Huang Ta-chou (黃大洲) said.
Set to compete
Chen Chuan-shou (陳全壽), head of the National Council on Physical Fitness and Sports and a former Olympic athlete, said, "The Chinese Taipei team, which consists of 85 competitors, is slated to depart for Athens on Aug. 2."
The Chinese Taipei team is scheduled to participate in 12 events: shooting, table tennis, softball, cycling, archery, baseball, weightlifting, Taekwondo, rowing, badminton, Judo and diving.
