Dump Lien and get started on reform: KMT city councilors

    By Jimmy Chuang
    STAFF REPORTER
    Saturday, May 22, 2004, Page 2

Four Chinese Nationalist Party (KMT) Taipei City councilors began seeking support yesterday for their campaign to bring about reform in the KMT and bring an end to KMT Chairman Lien Chan's (連戰) time as the party's leader.

The four councilors -- Chen Chin-hsiang (陳錦祥), Chen Yung-te (陳永德), Chen Yi-chou (陳義洲) and Chen Cheng-chung (陳政忠) -- said they are fed up with the unconstructive arguments and complaints that KMT heavyweights have been making since the presidential election and that the individuals making the complaints have not put forward any worthwhile proposals for solving the party's problems.

"We need reform and we need a new leader," Chen Chin-hsiang said.

"Lien is still arguing about the assassination attempt on [President] Chen Shui-bian (陳水扁) and [Vice President] Annette Lu (呂秀蓮), and the recount.

"However, there are more important things that we need to work on," Chen Chin-hsiang said.

Chen Chin-hsiang said that the KMT badly needs reform and a well-conceived plan to achieve it.

"If Lien keeps ignoring our requests, we will consider protesting in front of KMT headquarters or Lien's residence," Chen Chin-hsiang said.

A press release issued by the four councilors said that for the time being they are throwing their support behind Taipei City Mayor Ma Ying-jeou (馬英九) as the KMT's chairman.

"We need a new leader. But it does not have to be one person in particular," Chen Chin-hsiang said.

"It could be Ma but it could be somebody else, too. Ma is currently our favorite," Chen Chin-hsiang said.

According to the four, they will endorse a candidate for the chairmanship during July's meeting of KMT members.
