The Central Election Commission is planning to push for an amendment to the Referendum Law (
CEC authorities made the decision Tuesday on the second day of the recount of ballots cast in the March 20 election. Most of the controversial votes so far are misplaced ballots as a result of the referendum that was held in tandem with the election.
Commenting on the commission's decision, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) Secretary-General Chang Chun-hsiung (
Chang noted that the DPP proposal to hold a referendum -- suggested by the president to allow voters to voice their opposition to Beijing's missile threats -- in conjunction with the presidential election, was aimed at saving taxpayers' money and the proposal was carried out only after it cleared the legislative floor.
Legislative Speaker Wang Jin-pyng (
Wang said the government should have consulted with the public before coming up with the draft bill, as collective wisdom would have helped expose the loopholes, if any, in the bill.
Noting that the Executive Yuan had initially insisted on having the ballota for the referendum and the election handed to voters at the same time, Wang said that if that idea had prevailed, there would have been even more chaos.
The administration bowed to critics and had ballot papers for the referendum handed at separately from the election ballots.

In a video clip provided by the Coalition of Students Resisting the CCP (Chinese Communist Party), Taiwanese-American Cosette Wu (吳亭樺) and Tibetan-American Tsering Yangchen are seen holding banners that together read:

Heat advisories were in effect for nine administrative regions yesterday afternoon as warm southwesterly winds pushed temperatures above 38°C in parts of southern Taiwan, the Central Weather Administration (CWA) said. As of 3:30pm yesterday, Tainan’s Yujing District (玉井) had recorded the day’s highest temperature of 39.7°C, though the measurement will not be included in Taiwan’s official heat records since Yujing is an automatic rather than manually operated weather station, the CWA said.
