Police located 38,504 missing people last year, in addition to helping clarify the identities of 628 others, the National Police Administration (NPA) said yesterday.

As of December, the NPA had received 383,537 applications for assistance to search for missing family members.

"We have so far managed to locate 368,530 of those who were reported missing," the official said, adding that 15,007 remain unaccounted for.

Last year the agency received 35,776 reports of missing persons, and 87 percent of those people have been tracked down. Among those who were located last year, 7,423 people were reported missing in previous years.

As searching for missing persons involves a number of complicated tasks, the agency needs the help of private groups and members of the public in tracking them down, the official said.

"We hope local citizens and civic organizations will volunteer their services to facilitate our work," the official said.
