Chen promises `normal' country in second term

    CNA, TAICHUNG
    Monday, Jan 05, 2004, Page 3

President Chen Shui-bian (³¯¤ô«ó) said on the campaign trail yesterday that he will build Taiwan into a "normal, complete and great democratic country" if he is re-elected.

Addressing a rally marking the inauguration of his campaign office in Taichung, Chen said many ambitious infrastructure projects launched by his administration are half complete.

"I hope to have four more years in office to oversee their completion," Chen said.

Moreover, Chen said, he has outlined the 10 new construction projects to improve national competitiveness and enhance people's quality of life.

Once these projects are completed, Chen said, Taiwan will join the ranks of advanced countries.

"The 10 new construction projects will leave a proud legacy for future generations, rather than leave debts for posterity as the opposition camp has claimed," Chen added.
