Thieves used the cover of an adjacent construction site to steal NT$27 million from the vault of a bank in Taipei over the weekend.
Clerks of the Wanhua branch of the Hua Nan Commercial Bank returned to work yesterday morning to discover a 50cm hole in the bank's vault and NT$27 million cash, an undisclosed amount of US currency and US traveler's checks missing.
Police rushed to the scene and found a knife and hundreds of footprints and palm prints.
They suspected a coordinated group was involved in the theft. Entry appeared to have been made through a firebreak alley separating the bank from an adjacent building which was under construction. The group had broken through three heavy iron grates to get to the wall of the vault.
Neighbors reported the sound of jackhammers being used in the area over the weekend.
The bank's alarm was triggered, but a security guard sent to investigate was reported to have found nothing suspicious and left the scene.
Police believe at least five people are involved but no arrests have been made.
